We are stoked to welcome Nikesh Shukla back to Storysmith, this time joined by poet and author Jack Underwood for a discussion of their work. Nikesh’s most recent book is Brown Baby: A Memoir of Race, Family and Home, and Jack’s is Not Even This: Poetry, Parenthood and Living Uncertainly.

This is a unique chance to see two authors converging on a universal but sometimes mysterious subject – fatherhood, and how we raise children in troubled times.

About Nikesh Shukla

Nikesh Shukla is an author, screenwriter, fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and one of the most prominent UK voices on diversity and inclusion in the arts. He is the editor of bestselling essay collection The Good Immigrant, which won the Reader’s Choice at the Books Are My Bag Awards, and was shortlisted for Book of the Year at the British Book Awards. He is the author of a number of novels for both adults and young adults including Coconut Unlimited (shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Award and longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize), Meatspace, Run Riot, The Boxer (longlisted for the Carnegie Medal) and co-editor of The Good Immigrant USA. He hosts the ‘Brown Baby’ podcast which explores how we raise our kids with joy and wonder in uncertain and bleak times.

About Jack Underwood

Jack Underwood is a poet, writer and critic, based in London. His debut collection of poems Happiness was published by Faber in 2015 and was winner of the Somerset Maugham Award. His work has appeared in The Poetry Review, Poetry London, Five Dials, PracCrit, New Statesman, The Observer, TLS, Poetry, The White Review and Tate etc., as well as internationally, and in translation. He has collaborated with artists, composers and musicians, including work for radio and opera, and he is a senior lecturer in English and Creative Writing at Goldsmiths College, University of London.

His non-fiction book, Not Even This, was published by Corsair in 2021 and explores poetic language, knowledge and uncertainty.
